Statement of Interests
Wealth Management
An analyst intern in the field of wealth management starts their day early, well before the markets open and ends it late. They begin by examining the changes in the market, various movements, updates in business news, and any and all relevant economic indicators. These efforts and the relevant analysis help an intern prepare for discussions throughout the workday as well as the necessary client meetings. Additionally, an intern spends the day making various financial models to assess risk and return profiles for different asset classes. A significant portion will also be spent on the analysis of financial statements. Analytical and statistical skills are key to the job and vital to understand one’s work. This is the aspect of the job that primarily draws me in. I have an analytical mind, well-versed in both calculus and statistics, as well as the study and analysis of media through my film second major which has given me valuable critical. The dynamic nature of financial markets and the challenge of developing personalized investment strategies entices me, especially as it pertains to helping others achieve their investment goals. The chance for continuous growth and adaptation also interests me, as the field of wealth management constantly evolves. In order to stay at the forefront of the industry, one needs to regularly adapt to new trends, tools, and strategies. My ability to adapt is apparent through my job as a WUSA or student associate where I regularly juggled the needs and concerns of up to 70 students while helping them transition into a new school. Additionally, I have experience shadowing at an investment management firm, Shorepoint Capital Partners, where I was able to gain hands-on experience and knowledge from experts in the industry. Lastly my time in WUSIF, WashU’s student investment fund has given me necessary experience in analyzing and pitching stocks in front a large audience. The major gap I have as of right now is a lack of practical experience working in a wealth management firm. This summer I will plug this gap when I join the team at Universal Wealth Management as an intern. Lastly I lack the technical knowledge needed to excel in an investment management environment. However, I am currently working my way through gaining a Bloomberg Market Concepts certificate as well as multiple finance-based books to further my knowledge.
Consulting
An intern in the field of consulting has a fast-paced and varied workday with often multiple, concurrent projects in the pipeline. They often start by reviewing project timelines, client deliverables, and team assignments in order to ensure everything is on track and everyone is on the same page. Much of the work involves conducting research, gathering data, and performing industry analysis all in the name of supporting clients. Client interaction is the vital task of the role with frequent meetings to determine the absolute needs of clients are being met. This culminates with presentations, reports, and various other deliverables to properly convey findings and ultimately come up with recommendations. The primary skills needed for the job are attention to detail, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, all of which I have nurtured through my various experiences. The primary aspect of consulting that draws me in is the chance to make a real difference in the business world by facing the complex problems clients are dealing with and the necessary human interaction that comes with it. Relationship building is key to the job, and as a consultant I would have the chance to collaborate in a variety of environments and build meaningful and lasting relationships. This variety is especially important to me as it would me allow to work on a diverse range of projects across multiple industries requiring a broad set of skills. Motivation is inherent to the job as the effects of my work would be apparent and real. The meaningful and tangible impact I would have on my clients give the job a concrete sense of importance. With my background in media studies and finance I have the necessary analytical and problem-solving skills. My research abilities have been proven via my involvement in WUSIF as I have analyzed multiple large corporations including TopGolf Callaway. My limited experience in consulting projects is the major gap evident. To address this, I plan to pursue projects in the summer and fall through my school. I also am looking into multiple online and in person consulting workshops.
